Urban Sprawl
What is urban sprawl?
Urban sprawl is the spreading of a city or its suburbs. It often involves the construction of residential and commercial buildings in rural areas or otherwise undeveloped land at the outskirts of a city.
How does urban sprawl affect cities? Especially Detroit.
Urban sprawl leads to the mass movement of people from the city to the suburbs thus making the city virtually empty. Also, when residents relocate outside of a city’s core, they take their tax dollars with them. Often, it’s the city’s poorest residents that are left behind. This creates economic disparity and stratification based upon location. It also creates funding problems for the core, which directly affects the money available for education, crime prevention, and maintenance and upkeep. Urban sprawl can also lead to economic “white flight.”Urban sprawl leads to racial segregation as minorities are often left behind in the poorest parts of a region. Looking back this is the case with Detroit. The city is empty and most people who still live there are poor minority groups.
What do I think?
I feel like Detroit got to big for their britches when they were is their prime and kept expanding the city, never thinking that their city will fall. Well, it did and now Detroit was the victim of urban sprawl with everybody moving to the suburbs at the first sign of trouble. This left all the poor, African Americans in a quickly decaying city.
