Are you a Detroiter?
A lot of people always ask me where I am from and I always answer West Bloomfield. But from my answer I always get blank looks, so then I always see, "It's right next to Detroit" and then I get looks of recognition. And even when I saw this I can see them thinking that I am a Detroiter even though I don't view myself as one. This reason is because I don't live in Detroit and I am not from Detroit so why would I say I was a Detroiter. To me a Detroiter is someone who is from and has lived in Detroit. Not someone like me who lives next to it in a prominent suburb. And I think others from the metropolitan area answer the same way and only say we are from Detroit if no one knows where West Bloomfield is.
Now what makes a real rapper is up to the musician himself. If they enjoy music and it consumes their every thought and they don't stop until their dream is met. 8 Mile touches on this when B-Rabbit is made fun of because he can't be a real rapper because he chocked during a rap battle and isn't a real Detroiter because he isn't black and doesn't specifically live in Detroit.
Authenticity was the main subject in the movie and the reason why it is the main reason is because authenticity is really important to people in Detroit. If someone has nothing material all they have then are their words of authenticity. Authenticity is even more important to musicians in the music culture because that is what songs are made of; the truth. With music the truth is set free out onto the world. In 8 Mile in the final rap battle B-Rabbit talks about being a authentic Detroiter and how Papa Doc isn't one since he isn't from Detroit and actually went to Cranbrook for school.
