Model: An Unexpected Journey
-A Model Tale by Stephanie Vettese -
This year I have decided to do things a little differently. My theme for this year is a spinoff of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. I was just sitting around thinking what I should for my FAP in Geoff’s class. I knew I couldn’t really do anything cutesy like I did last year for Andrea’s class. So it just popped into my head that The Hobbit just came out and the title fits what Model is and that’s an unexpected journey.
Now starting off my journey I look over the horizon and see what stops I have to make in order to complete my adventure. Those stops include Adventure English, Imaging and Detroit Lit. But to get there I have to go through forests, monsters’ dwellings, and finally peaceful kingdoms. Let us not dealing so we can begin a most unexpected journey!
After much walking I have made it to the forest where I will stop awhile and rest my weary feet. This forest reminds me of another forest I have been residing in this semester. That forest can be found on Bowers Farm where my Adventure English class took place. This class I can honestly say is the best opportunity that Model can give you. With this class you are able to learn more about yourself and the people around you. I met new people who I didn’t even know went to our school and learned something new about people who I have known since kindergarten.
But besides the social aspect about this class there was the physical and educational aspects shown as well. As people may know Adventure English counts as an English credit and a gym credit. In regards to the English credit, which is the educational aspect of the class, we were giving readings that were about a couple pages long and then we had to reflect on them. Now this part of the class wasn’t my favorite, but I did enjoy how deeply the readings made us think and reflect upon our lives. I especially liked when we had to reflect on the physical aspects of the class, i.e. the ropes courses or the games that were played in the gym. I learned that I know my limitations and even when I can’t participate in everything I find ways to be part of the group. But what I mean about this is that that class at Bower’s was split into two ropes courses.
The first ropes course was the low ropes course. This course I excelled in. I had excellent balance and flexibility that was needed in order for these excises to be accomplished as a group. But before I move on I just want to point out that during the low ropes course my Adventure English class started to really bond and become closer together, especially after this spaceship activity where we had to fit twenty-one people on a block that was probably two feet wide and two feet long. During this activity we became close together as a group literally and metaphorically.
Anyways, the second ropes course was the high ropes course and that was the course I said above where I learned my limitations. I did not excel per say on the high ropes. I’m terrified of heights and freaked out the first time I climbed a tree. I stopped then and didn’t do any other high ropes activity, but instead of climbing I was always helping belay people so I could stay involved.
Now leaving the forest after a nice long rest we start up the journey again and head onward. Up ahead there’s a fire glowing and trolls hanging around it. Let’s sidetrack them and head for their cave instead and stop there for the night.
Stopping at the troll’s cave this is a perfect place to talk about Imaging since Peg’s room is a cave onto itself. This was my third time taking Imaging and I have to say it wasn’t really my favorite class this year, which was surprising to me. Every time I have taken this class I have loved it, but this year I just have felt uninspired. Also, I feel like we have done less this semester than I have done in past imaging classes. But looking back now I do realize it wasn’t the class’s fault for my bad experience this semester. I feel like I had a little senioritis and also we had to make a website for this class too and I just was exhausted from making a previous website in my Detroit class. But one thing is true and that is I enjoy taking pictures and I loved blending my Imaging and Detroit class together and sometimes when I was free during my Adventure English class at Model I took the opportunity to take pictures there as well.
Finally, leaving the darkness of the troll’s cave and entering the light we make our way towards the city of Rivendell where we can about my last class I took here at that was Detroit Lit. My experience with this class started with a rocky start. At first I thought was I going to switch out of this course, but then I thought that I will stick with this and see where it goes. Looking back on that decision I think I made the right one. I enjoyed learning about the city of Detroit because even though I live only about forty-five minutes away I have barely been there. My favorite part of the class was the Murder City documentary because I love learning about the history of Detroit and their past crime bosses. One reason why I liked this class so much was that it combined my love for history, photography for my Imaging class when it came to the field trip, and my natural curiosity to learn more about something I don’t know. But one issue I had with this class was that I had an issue with the documentaries, minus the Our School documentary, which were a little weird and heard to understand. Also, I kind of got sick of the techno music and the White Strips, which by the way I learned that I hate. But above all I liked the class and what I learned.
Now finally leaving Rivendell and my classes behind I start on the mountain trail, which is rocky and full of my struggles that I faced this semester. My one main struggle this year was turning my assignments in on time. Yes, I didn’t get points off, but that is not the principle of the thing. If I am going to survive in the real world then I need to learn how to turn things in on time. Also, it was a struggle to keep up both of my websites and my Adventure English writing because it was just so much at one time and yes, I did struggle, but I turned in everything. My second to last struggle was taking pictures for my imaging class because as I said before I was just uninspired and that led me to dragging my feet when it came to taking pictures. Lastly, as I said before my last struggle was during my Adventure English class with climbing the trees in the high ropes course and my fear of heights. Due to my fear of heights I wasn’t able to participate in the high ropes course and because of this I regret not pushing past my fears.
Finally, we have left the Misty Mountains and my struggles and regrets behind and now our making the final stretch of the journey home. While we are returning home let’s look at what I have accomplished throughout the semester. I major accomplishment was that I have gotten to meet new people and grow closer to the one’s I have already known. Second I have shown accomplishment when considering the Core Values. I think I excelled in meaningful work, fostering creativity, quality relationships and building community. With the core value of meaningful work I have shown a lot of meaningful work by putting time and effort into my assignments. With fostering creativity I’ve shown this by the use of my websites, which I have learned that I loved creating. Finally, quality relationships and building community go hand and hand with each other in my Adventure English class. My third and last accomplishment is growing in the Core Competency of self-awareness. I know that I am not perfect and I don’t get perfect grades, but I am aware of myself in where I need improvements and where I exceed.
My journey is finally at an end and it was an interesting, unexpected journey. There were some ups and some downs. I set to accomplish my goals, which were mainly to have fun and try not to let senioritis take over and I did. At the beginning I couldn’t wait for this journey to end, but now looking back I just want to start this journey all over again. And just remember that this is a tale of a Model student who went there and back again.
