Our School Review
Our School is a documentary that focuses on the life of students, principals and teachers at three specific Detroit public high schools. These three high schools were Mackenzie High School (now closed since 2007), Catherine Ferguson Academy For Young Mothers, and Southeastern High School of Technology. The whole idea of this documentary came about when Detroit Public Schools announced the closing of 34 public high schools in Detroit alone in 2005.
While focusing in on these three schools each differ from each other. Let's first look at Mackenzie. Mackenzie High School was one of the schools that faced the closer. Looking closer at Mackenzie it was a typical Detroit high school. Meaning it had low student enrollment and high security. T\Now taking a look at Catherine Ferguson Academy for Young Mothers. This was a school in Detroit that was specifically for pregnant teenages or teenage girls who have children already. This meant that there was a nursery for the children to be dropped off at and also science classes were different here because the chemicals used in regular science classes were too dangerous for pregnant women thus leading to a science class without chemicals i.e. a class held on a community farm. Lastly, there was Southeastern High School of Technology. This was a high school that was newly refurbished and state of the art in Detroit.
Now looking at my school, Andover, compared to the schools featured in Detroit there is a huge difference. One, the schools in Detroit are way bigger then Andover's less then 1000 student total. Detroit's schools have a couple thousand in there gigantic schools. Second, Andover doesn't have any pregnant students whereas in Detroit school's it is very common. Third, Andover does not have police checking the student for weapons when they enter the school. But some similarities between Detroit schools and Andover was that the principals and teachers seemed to care about the students. Also, when looking specifically at Southeastern and Andover the new technologies, like the Promethean broads, both schools had.
Lastly, looking specifically at the students between my school and the Detroit schools there are some similarities and some differences. One similarity was that we were both regular high school students and that being said one difference was that some, not all, Detroit students seemed more eager to learn. Also, as I said before more female students were pregnant in the schools, which was common. After saying all of this I know I would not fare well in the Detroit schools.
