Dear Geoff,
Truth be told I had no idea what we were going to be doing in this class. I mean for the first week and a half of school we just did ice breakers and other than that on the first day of class you went on a rant on how you hate having the word literature in a course name. So other than learning people’s names and how you hate the class’s name I had no clue what we were going to do. I sure wasn’t expecting how much influence on how the class is shaped we have.
Anyways, you ask what my specific strengths and weaknesses as a student are and how can I strengthen my strengths and improve on my weaknesses. Well, my first strength that I have is putting a lot of voice in my writing. In order to strengthen my voice in my writing, which I think is already strong, I have fun with it. When I have fun it shows in my writing. Mostly, I view writing as an extension of my ideas and of me as a person and that’s how I put so much voice into everything I do. Although, I do have a major weakness in my voice filled writing and that is my grammar. To improve on grammar skills I will probably review on all the basic grammar rules and when writing one of my many papers and then reviewing my papers I would want to have a print out of all the grammars rules next to my. With these print outs I can add in the correct grammar into my already great papers and make them great grammatically correct papers.
Other strengths of mine are being creative, having a passion for learning, and being able to listen and follow directions. All these strengths fit into this class perfectly! For being creative I need this when designing my website/portfolio, which you're reading right now. For having a passion to learn this is great because I need this passion, which will prevent me from getting bored, when I research about Detroit . Lastly, being able to listen well and follow directions is essential to excelling in any class I take present and future.
My last two weaknesses that I have are procrastination and shyness. First off, procrastination. I have always had trouble with procrastinating. I always plan to start whatever it is assigned to me, but then other stuff always get in the way and when I’m finally done with all this other stuff I just want to relax and do nothing else. Then, before I know it, I only have a day or two before my assignment is due, after having two or more weeks to do this. I always do the work and turn everything in on time, but it just gets exhausting. I hope this year I can overcome this weakness and move on with my life. Lastly, my shyness. I am a very shy person so I never talk in class, but I want to. I improve on my shyness by having to always push myself and once I get comfortable enough in class I will talk a lot more!
About the projects for Detroit Literature I have no clue what I want to do! But I do know what I want to research and learn more about. I’m interested in the history of Detroit. I want to learn more about Detroit when it was in its prime and about the Motown period, I also want to research about the Detroit built companies like Vernors or Faygo. Detroit built companies are few in many and to me this causes me to want to learn more about these few Detroit companies. But mostly, I want to learn what Detroit used to be like before it became one of the worst cities to live in and one of the most dangerous too.
I’m not sure if you could tell that one of my passions is history from the paragraph above because most of what I want to do is research the history of Detroit. Another one of my passions is art history. So for the class I can research famous works (paintings) from painters that depict Detroit or I can just research about the DIA. Lastly, another passion of mine is photography. I could find photographs that are of Detroit from different time periods and create a timeline from these photos alone.
Now, what you can do to help me. I feel like that in order to help me you might need to check in on me to see if I’m on track or if I’m doing things correctly. One problem is that since I’m so quiet my teachers think I have everything under control and most of the time that’s correct, but there are times when I don’t feel comfortable asking questions and just sit there being confused. I’ll need you to just check up on me once and a while to make sure I’m on track and that this being confused thing doesn’t happen. Also, when I’m researching I might need your help to find more resources or help find books on your self that pertains to my research. Sometimes I can’t find anything I’m looking up, but since you’re an expert on Detroit you know where to look. And lastly, just know that I’m quiet and although I might get confused from time to time I usually know what I’m doing. Even though I don’t say anything I am listening and absorbing the information that you tell us. So being quiet doesn’t mean I’m stupid or lost or bored; it just means that I’m hearing what you say.
Finally, how will I know how I'm doing? I’ll know how I’m doing that if I’m on schedule, turning things in on time and if I’m actually interested in what I’m doing, then I'm doing well. If not, then I won't be doing well. Also, if I’m having fun and on schedule then I know I’m doing well too. Hopefully, I will be on the right track and I’ll have a fun class that I enjoy coming to everyday!
